On our first day in Kyoto we visited Nijo Castle. Nijo castle was built early in the 1600s for the Shogun when he came to visit the Emperor. (The shogun lived in Edo, now Tokyo, while the Emperor resided in Kyoto). Over the 250 years of shogunate rule, the castle was used by a shogun only a couple of times. Greame was most impressed by it.
