Today (Sunday) we're in Nagano in the central highlands. Nagano is known to most for the hosting of a winter Olympics but its history is far older. A part of what is now the city of Nagano is the old castletown of Matsushiro. Matsushiro was controlled during the Edo period by the Sanada clan which contained some very famous samurai. Every year around this time Matsushiro has a festival honouring the Sanada with the highlight being a parade of people dressed in period costume.
